America’s new choice trend for home flooringby Scott Best Americans once again have been drawn to the beauty and practicality of simple flooring materials such as stone and wood. Nothing adds richness to a home as do natural flooring materials that have not only lasting beauty and durability but sound ecological overtones as well. Materials like stone tile, bamboo and all manner of hardwood floors are long lasting and easily maintained. There once was a time when wall to wall carpeting was unheard of in a home, for many reasons. One of the biggest was the lack of an effective way to clean such flooring. Only with the dawn of the affordable electric vacuum was it practical to have such flooring. Early carpeting was nothing more then large rugs that were rolled up and carried outside to have the dust and dirt beaten out of them with sticks or poles as they were either hung over the branch of a tree or suspended over a wire made specifically for the task. The advent of cheap machine woven carpets and the improvement of the electric vacuum made it seemingly more practical to have rooms full of carpet. Everyone had wood or stone floors, because those were the natural materials available. Those of wealth could afford to purchase large rugs and carpet. Not to say that rugs and carpet didn’t have and still don’t have a place in the home, still early on fashion was a great influence. More and more though, it seems that carpeting in a home may add to some health problems that have become a major concern in our society today. Airborne allergens that cause many different repertory disorders may be worsened by having certain carpets in a home. No matter how effective a vacuum cleaner is, there will still be a significant amount of debris that is trapped in the weave and later is thrust into the air by normal traffic. And so the trend to have every room carpeted has come full circle. The decorative richness, flexibility, durability and their ease of maintenance have changed the way we feel about natural flooring materials once again. Many home owners have pulled up carpets for the purpose of replacing it only to find exquisite natural wood or stone flooring that for the sake of fashion trend had been covered over. The durability and lasting value of natural flooring materials such as bamboo, exotic hardwood and natural stone tile flooring will add beauty and value to a home for years to come as well as reduce maintenance cost and possibly even enable us to live healthier.
